Civil Rights Movement in the US

Blacks in the US before and after the Civil Rights Movement

In my following report about blacks in the USA I will devide the situation
between times before and after the Civil Rights Movement. It will show how
life of this special group has changed during the last three centuries and
how their status is in today's society.

The history of blacks in America started with the first import of twenty
Africans to Jamestown in Virginia. Those men were brought there as
“servants”. They had to work on cotton and tobacco fields in the south.
During the next hundred years the number of slaves increased greatly.
Slavery became legal in the south but illegal in the north until the Civil
War broke out in 1861. Four years later the northern states defeated the
south and thousands of slaves were freed throughout the nation. Then in
1896 blacks officially became American citizens but there was
discrimination at its worst in the south. By declarations of the Supreme
Court at the end of the 19th century segregation on buses, theatres and so
on began. That's why more and more blacks moved to cities in the north,
looking for jobs. In this time the Civil Rights Movement started, both
blacks and whites didn't want to put themselves up with segregation and
discrimination.

The most important person during the Civil Rights Movement was Dr Martin
Luther King. His speeches all over the country caused the people to
protest peacefully against racism because peace was a stronger weapon. In
1963 he led 250,000 people to Washington, D.C. in the largest protest
march in US history so far. His speech “I have a dream…” marked the climax
of the Civil Rights Movement. Supreme Court and Congress both made not
insignificant concessions for blacks, for example the law that made
discrimination illegal in hotels, restaurants and important fields of
employment. With the assassination of Martin Luther King riots broke out
in major American cities. If you look at charts you can see that the
situation of blacks has improved, although one-third of black American
families still live in poverty. Now it is possible for blacks to get a
good education. The percentage of blacks who are college graduates has
increased by ca. 7 % in a period of about twenty years. But the progress
of life in ghettos has gone from bad to very much worse. Today crime,
gangs and drugs rule the situation. There is no contact between groups who
live on welfare and those from a successful, middle-class background. In
times before the Civil Rights Movement a sense of community developed and
young blacks who grew up in such areas had clear role models.

All in all you can see that the development to improve the situation of
blacks seems to be a never ending progress. Of course, in some aspects
life has improved for blacks but there are people on the other hand who
claim that there is no difference between before and after the Civil
Rights Movement. I think you cannot directly compare these two times
because there also have been a lot of changes in our society that make it
difficult to say that the situation for blacks today is much better than
before.

Les nochmal drüber, ist nicht von mir und ich hab auch nie drüber gelesen.. C&P
